What is Ketamine Therapy?

what is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine was originally developed as a general anesthetic in the 1960s. In the 2000s, it evolved into an effective way to treat depression, anxiety and PTSD. In many cases, more quickly and effectively than traditional antidepressants and medications.

So, what is ketamine therapy? What are the benefits and why is it important? Today’s articles will answer these questions to help you make an informed decision whether you should move forward and consider ketamine therapy for yourself or a loved one. Read on!

Benefits of Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine therapy can treat a wide range of health conditions but at NuMed DPC, we use it primarily to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain.

A clinical trial recently conducted concluded that ketamine therapy is not only beneficial for the aforementioned conditions but also safe without many side effects of other medications.

Traditional antidepressants and medications need weeks to build up in your body to start working while ketamine can work within hours.

Ketamine activates special serotonin receptors in the brain to control anxiety symptoms, such as fear and anxiousness for unknown reasons, sweating, panic attacks, etc. Ketamine therapy is also beneficial for treating:

  • As an anesthetic for treating fractures and joint dislocations
  • Trauma, spinal pain, arm, leg, and abdominal aches
  • Depression, bipolar disorder, and sleep disorders

Additionally, ketamine offers a decreased need for narcotic painkillers. In the U.S. alone, we’ve seen a big spike in addiction for painkillers. Many start as treatment for chronic pain but escalates into an addiction.

Although ketamine therapy has shown very positive results with our patients, it’s not a one-size-fits-all. It’s important to discuss your options, possible side effects and how it fits into your overall lifestyle.

How Does Ketamine Therapy Work?

There is clearly a biochemical component to how ketamine treats depression and other disorders. The exact mechanism, as with many treatments for mental health, is not totally understood. One of the leading theories is that ketamine blocks the NMDA receptor which causes an increase in a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The increase in BDNF causes new synapses to be created in the brain which in turn improves one’s mood.
